Gord Hunter built his career helping people get around. The retired transport engineer likes to say there isn’t a road in Ontario he didn’t have something to do with. But four years ago, when he turned 80, Hunter lost his driver’s license because of his cataracts and now he’s the one who needs help getting from point A to point B. That’s where Lynda Caron comes in. Last fall, she launched “Angell’s Professional Caregiving, Companionship and Personal Support Services,” and that involves taking seniors like Hunter grocery shopping or to appointments. It also involves a variety of other services such as caregiver relief, assistance with preparing meals and general support with activities related to daily living. But it’s more than just a job for Caron. “I treat my clients like family because my mom and dad are both gone”, she said, adding she’s happiest when she has someone to care for. Before beginning her business, Caron was a stay-at-home mom for many years. “My youngest was in Grade 8 and it was time for me to get a career,” said Caron. She enrolled at Loyalist College and completed the personal support worker program. |
After that, she worked as support worker through an agency. She met Hunter three years ago when he needed help with his dying wife. Hunter said Caron’s care for his wife was full of love, tenderness and compassion. “In other words, it’s the type of treatment you would give your mother yourself,” he said. After Hunter’s wife died, Caron continued to work with him a few hours a week. His daughters, who live in Toronto, will often send her grocery lists by e-mail before days like Easter and she makes sure the fridge is stocked for their arrival. If people have a child who doesn’t live here, I can be the connection,” said Caron. Hunter was so impressed with her services, he encouraged her to go into business for herself. Caron said that suited her because she felt agencies put too many limitations on what she could do. Now, she can set her own hours of work. She also got a special license for her car and insurance that allows her to drive her clients around. “I wanted to do a full service on my own that I couldn’t do with an agency,” said Caron. “I feel I wear different hats,” said Caron. “I have to be a chaplain sometimes, sometimes I have to be a counsellor, sometimes I’m a really good friend.” |
Linda Caron has a true calling to be a personal support worker. The name of her business “Angell’s” aptly describes her as she is kindness and compassion personified. Linda came to us when my mother was in the final stages with a brain tumour. I will never forget her compassion in dealing with my mother and providing her with the physical, mental and emotional support she needed as her condition deteriorated. She would stand by my mother’s bedside soothing her any time she could see she needed it. Linda also works well with others as we had two other nursing agencies in our home to provide 24 hour care. She was a valued member of the care team that eased my mother’s pain and suffering. Linda has continued to be a tremendous asset to our family. My sister and I have relied on her to help us with our 85 year old father who continued to live in Belleville on his own after the death of my mother. She has provided support, companionship and assistance as required maintaining his independence which we greatly appreciate since we live in Toronto. Her cheerful personality and her ability to listen helped our family through the grieving process. Linda’s commitment and dedication to her clients along with her technical knowledge make her an excellent personal support worker for any care situation. Thank you for the support you have provided to our family – we truly appreciate it! Rita Hunter I had the pleasure of hiring Lynda, a recent graduate of Loyalist College to carry out general household duties, light cleaning, meals, laundry and errands. She aided the nurses working on shifts around the clock tending to my wife who had a terminal illness. Lynda is an excellent P.S.W., punctual with a very agreeable manner getting along with the various shift nurses and a hard worker. As my wife's physical condition deteriorated Lynda was required to assist the nurses in performing such duties as washing, moving, and other general activities caused by my wife's loss of power and memory. Lynda's P.S.W. training in this situation became invaluable. Lynda has many great qualities, outstanding in tenderness, love and compassion, which she gave to my wife in her time of need, always devoting time and effort towards improving my wife's quality of life. I have no hesitation recommending Lynda to anyone requiring a P.S.W. of highest integrity and performance. Gorden Hunter P.Eng. THE HEART OF LYNDA
